In the aftermath of the Trump election, we’re trying to figure out what to do. Push to secede? Protest? Jana’s idea is to volunteer. Show your community that you’re loving and accepting of everyone by volunteering in your community’s social services. Some ideas in SF include:
The Episcopal Community Services of San Francisco offer opportunities to serve meals to the homeless, be an adult tutor, among other opportunities. The organization also offers housing and senior aide, but also has programs to help the homeless find employment.
Big Brothers Big Sisters is another great organization, and requires a more long-term commitment, but is well worth it! You’ll be paired with a child and spend time with them weekly or monthly providing a safe space and a mentor that they may not already have in their life.
Reading Partners also works with children. Through Reading Partners, volunteers schedule times to tutor 1 on 1 with a child by reading to them, having dialogue, and helping them practice reading.
There’s hundreds of other ways to volunteer in the Bay Area. We’re happy to continue offering suggestions, just let us know what you’re interested in and we can do some research together!
And a final quote from Bill and Ted: Be excellent to each other.
